PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

TEACHING

Assisted (with Dr. Scott Holland) in the teaching of courses in the Biomedical Engineering Department at the University of Cincinnati (BME 712: Advanced Topics in MRI).  Lectures given on topics including Fourier Transforms, Image Reconstruction, Fast Imaging, Basic Principles of BOLD Imaging, Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

Given lectures on use of image processing software (authored by myself) including a series of four lectures for interested researchers in the Summer of 2009.  Also assisted on an individual/as-needed basis.

Mentored post-doctoral research associates Prasanna Karunanayaka, Ph.D., and Weihong Yuan, Ph.D, at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.  Dr. Yuan subsequently obtained a faculty position at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Mentored Pediatric Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery fellow Dr. Evan Probst.  A paper “Neuroanatomical differences in children with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss detected using functional magnetic resonance imaging” with Dr. Probst as first author won 2nd prize at the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology meeting in Seattle, WA in Spring 2009.

Co-chaired the Ph.D. dissertation committee of Lori Kroeger at the University of Cincinnati.  Her dissertation research investigated the neural correlates of math processing in children with math disabilities, as compared with typically achieving children, using functional MRI.

Member of dissertation committee of Rola Farah at the University of Cincinnati.  Her dissertation research investigated differences in brain structure and function related to auditory processing in children with atypical “left-ear advantage” on dichotic listening tasks, as compared with normal children who exhibit “right-ear advantage”.

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS:

The role of the cerebral vasculature (“neuro-vascular unit”) in normal cognitive function and pathology.  The vasculature in the brain is intricately connected to neurons and synapses in the brain (the “neurovascular unit”) using neurotransmitters such as nitric oxide as well as astrocytes, which contact blood vessels.  Aberrant NVU function may therefore play a role in adverse neurocognitive outcomes both in apparently normal as well as pathologic populations.  I am now investigating NVU function and its relation to cognition on populations such as patients with congenital heart disease.  This research holds out the exciting promise that NVU function may in fact be modifiable.

The relation of brain connectivity and topology to normal cognitive function and pathology.  Subtle differences in brain connectivity (rather than gross differences in morphology) are thought to underlie many disorders such as schizophrenia or autism.  I am now collaborating on several projects which are investigating whether subtle differences in brain network topology (as determined using sophisticated graph analysis techniques) may underlie adverse neurocognitive outcomes in pathologies such as preterm birth and congenital heart disease (CHD).  In both these populations, the quality of medical care has increased in recent decades, leading to much lower mortality rates.  However, adverse neurocognitive and behavioral outcomes have also been documented.  Our research demonstrates the potential of measures of topology to be potent biomarkers for neurocognitive outcome.

Optimization of MRI acquisition and reconstruction procedures.  Procedures for acquiring and reconstructing MRI data (developed in large part in the 1980s) have not kept pace with advances in computing power in recent years.  Improved MRI hardware also provides the promise of much improved MR images.  I am researching using clinically determined feature sets in order to provide a sparse basis upon which optimal acquisition and reconstruction strategies may be based.  Fast acquisition/reconstruction techniques which train mainly on normal images risk losing information relevant to clinicians.
